Armenian Cheureg – A Taste of Tradition

🧂 Ingredients (for 1 dozen)

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2¼ tsp active dry yeast
  • ½ cup warm milk
  • ½ cup melted butter (unsalted)
  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 1 tsp mahleb (optional but traditional)
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Sesame seeds (for topping)
  • 1 egg yolk + 1 tbsp milk (for egg wash)

👩‍🍳 Method

  1. Activate yeast: In a small bowl, mix warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Mix dough: In a large bowl, combine flour, salt, mahleb, and vanilla. Add eggs, melted butter, and the yeast mixture. Knead until smooth and elastic (about 10 minutes).
  3. Let it rise: Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place for 1–2 hours until doubled in size.
  4. Shape the braids: Divide dough into equal portions. Roll each into ropes and braid them into small loaves.
  5. Second rise: Place braids on a baking sheet, cover, and let rise for another 30–45 minutes.
  6. Brush & bake: Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F). Brush each braid with egg wash and sprinkle sesame seeds. Bake for 20–25 minutes until golden brown.
