- Activate the Yeast Dissolve yeast in lukewarm water and let it rise until doubled.
- Prepare the Base In a saucepan, melt butter and shortening in milk. Let it cool to lukewarm.
- Mix the Wet Ingredients Beat eggs and sugar together in a medium bowl.
- Combine Everything In a large bowl, mix flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the egg-sugar mixture, the melted milk mixture, and finally the yeast. Knead until smooth (about 20 minutes). The dough will be wet—resist adding extra flour.
- First Rise Cover and let rise until doubled, about 6–8 hours.
- Shape the Loaves Punch down the dough, shape into loaves, and place in buttered and floured pans. Let rise again until dough fills the pan.
- Bake Brush tops with egg wash and bake at 350°F (175°C) for about 40 minutes, or until golden.
